OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS
Hot Air Ballooning in the Masai Mara is heartily
recommended as a unique method of sightseeing and game
viewing-no other aerial experience can compare with
the slow, silent, hawk's-eye view it provides.
Available every morning during the nine-month dry
season (providing appropriate weather prevails),
ballooning is safe, spectacular-and very popular. We
suggest an early reservation if you wish to add this
optional excursion to your itinerary. See page 103 for
details.
Lake Victoria Flying Safaris center around Rusinga
Island, just 40 minutes from the Masai Mara by charter
air. Rusinga is a renowned archaeological site, with
unusual stone formations, and the island can be used
as a base for a fishing expedition - Lake Victoria's
Nile Perch can weigh more than 200 pounds. See page
103 for more information.
EXTENDING YOUR SAFARI
Many other options for extending your trip are
available, and can be added prior to or following your
scheduled safari. See our "Off the Beaten Path" series
of programs beginning on page 92 of this brochure and
the programs in our "Independent Traveller Series"
starting on page 99.
THE TANZANIA HEMINGWAY SAFARI
A Fourteen-Day Classic Tented Safari with Optional
Extensions to
The Masai Mara and Mt. Kenya Safari Club
This classic tented safari makes a matchless
experience in the great game parks of northern
Tanzania available to you-in a style that, until
recently, only such adventurers as Ernest Hemingway,
Robert Ruark and Teddy Roosevelt have known. Just as
theirs did, your camps move with you as your staff
moves to new destinations when you are out exploring
in the bush. Tents, furniture, water and food,
lanterns and all the other equipment necessary to your
comfort in the bush are transported to your next
campsite, to be ready for your return at the end of
the day. On the Tanzania Hemingway Safari, you camp in
Tarangire National Park, famous for elephant and
indigenous birds; spend a night, as your staff moves
camp, at charming Gibb's Farm; and camp again near the
shores of Lake Manyara, nestled in the Great Rift
Valley's mahogany and fig forests. After two nights at
the lodge on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, an
ancient volcanic caldera which encloses its own
remarkable "lost world," spend the next three nights
in your own tented camp on the Serengeti Plains. Each
year this vast acacia-studded expanse hosts
one-and-a-half million wildebeest and one million
zebra and gazelle, on their Great Migration in a
search for life-sustaining grass, truly one of the
world's great wildlife spectacles. Two options in
Kenya are available to prolong the fun: game viewing
in the fabled Masai Mara and a stay at the world
renowned Mt. Kenya Safari Club.

HOT AIR BALLOONING IN AFRICA
Imagine drifting slowly and silently over the vast
African plains, as the sun breaks on the horizon.
Spread beneath you is a panorama of African wilderness
that surpasses anything you have seen before: elephant
looking improbably small next to scattered trees
antelope flowing in waves across the rippled fields; a
pair of lionesses stalking a knot of wildebeest; and
cheetah glancing up as the shadow of the huge balloon
crosses their paths. We heartily recommend ballooning
in Africa, both to first-timers and to those who have
made an ascent before, because no other aerial
experience can compare with this hawk's-eye view.
Balloon trips are available every morning
during the nine-month dry season (providing that
appropriate weather conditions prevail) in the Masai
Mara National Reserve in Kenya and in Tanzania's
Serengeti National Park. After about an hour aloft,
you descend to be met by your ground crew and a
sumptuous champagne breakfast in the bush. The cost is
approximately $350 per person.
The balloons in which you travel are the
largest used anywhere in the world, piloted and
operated by professionals with many hours of
experience in the air.
Balloon safaris should be booked at the time
your program reservation is made with Abercrombie &
Kent.
